Crazy Climber 2000 PS1 Review

Crazy Climber 2000 Title
Crazy Climber 2000 was released in Japan only in the year 2000 for the ps1 and this is a full-on remake of a classic game that was released in the arcades back in 1980 with the game also being released on home consoles at that time later in the likes of 1981 and 82 on various consoles likes of Atari and all those type of home computers.

So if you do remember the classic game this here is and plays very very similar as the idea of the game is to climb buildings while avoiding obstacles to get to the top of the levels. Even with access to this remake you do also have access to the original arcade game the old-school 2d style game as well so you can play both the original and the remake if you want to.

So the gameplay can be quite difficult to master as you have to climb without falling but you also have a load of different obstacles and hurdles to overcome as in order to climb you have to adjust to different patterns of items falling from above and even the likes of windows closing on top of you as you're trying to climb.

Crazy Climber Original Game
So if a window fully closes and you're still within the window ledge of the window that's closed you will instantly lose a life and you'll fall so you need to keep moving or try to adjust your position to avoid a window fully closing.

So what you can do is if a window is closed and you can adjust the button movements to have one hand up to another window ledge of a window that isn't closing so that way then you can at least stay active within the game but you can't really stay in the same place for too long because if you hang on the same spot eventually you lose your grip and you'll fall anyway.

Crazy Climber 2000 gameplay start
It is a fun game for what it's trying to do like the idea behind the game is quite simple even going back to the original game that was released in the 80s but it is difficult i'm not gonna deny that for a second as the controls even with the more modern version they can be quite clunky and fiddly to use because even at times from even my own experience after playing the game you have to adjust between using the likes of the triangle button and the x button along with using the directional buttons on the d-pad to adjust your movement so when you press triangle, the character will move a hand up in the air to grab onto the next ledge and then you need to press x to move the rest of your body up to grab it and you have to keep trying to do that the whole time.

It's like climbing a ladder, but the difficulty comes from when items are falling from above and you're trying to adjust your position sometimes you might only have one hand on the window ledge you can't move so you try to move down or if you do have hands and window ledge when you try to move sometimes you can move freely but then other times when you try to move say to the right sometimes it just doesn't work and i found that to be extremely frustrating as sometimes the controls themselves just aren't as responsive as they could be and for that reason alone they can be very very clunky and that can cause you to lose a lot of lives.

Crazy Climber 2000 obstacles
So i even found from multiple playthroughs of the game that a lot of this is yes dependent on skill but it really is dependent more so on luck than anything else to just hope that things just work in the way that you hope they will work.

But coupled with that and at certain points when you get to certain intervals of the level the difficulty does increase you have more items that drop down and especially more frequently because in some cases people will throw stuff out the window at you and in some cases it's random but then in other cases it's not because what happens is people will keep constantly just chucking stuff out at you to a point that you get to a certain position where you only have one avenue that you can climb up and the problem is you can't move left or right and they just keep chucking stuff down until they knock you off and that can be extremely repetitive and the ai can just be really just relentless at trying to knock you off which can be super frustrating.

Crazy Climber 2000 Ape
The only way to overcome this is literally to allow yourself to lose a life because what the game will do is it will reset you in that position where you fell off and then the enemies or the people dropping stuff out of you will no longer be there so even towards the end of the first level when you've gotten to near the top of the building that you're trying to climb there would be a gigantic ape almost like Godzilla in one of the scenes behind the building itself you'd be inside but he'd be reaching out trying to grab you and at times no matter how much you tried to climb he can literally grab you from anywhere and you're instantly dead so again the only way to get rid of him is literally to die and lose a life and then he disappears.

Then you can keep climbing all the way and it's kind of a case where it is rinse and repeat that way in order to get past a certain point because if the gorilla doesn't get you there are enemies throwing stuff at you or there are birds literally plopping stuff on you and it just becomes relentless to a point the only way to deal with it is to lose a life so that you can free up space so that you can start moving around until you get to the top, so it can get very very frustrating.

Crazy Climber 2000 end level
The idea of the game is fun and it is fun for a little while but you'll find yourself quickly getting frustrated, you'll find with each level you have to play it through multiple times to get to the top of the level but you'll even find even in your first couple of playthroughs that eventually when you do finish the first level you'll find that by the time you've gotten to the second level all your lives will have been used up and you'll pretty much have to continue or you'll have lost all of your lives in total and you pretty much can't go any further.

So that in itself can also lead to frustration because each level even though the visuals are different on each of the stages and again you have different obstacles to overcome but each idea of each level is exactly the same it's just to climb to the top so for most people if you're looking for something fun for a quick short burst it is worth a look if you're looking for something that is a bit more variety you may be better to look elsewhere as it does have some funny ideas and some cool aesthetics to it but it can get very very frustrating and mainly due to the difficulty of the ai when they're being relentless trying to drop you off the building.

Crazy Climber 2000 level 2
But more so the controls are probably the worst part of this game and that's where it leads to being very frustrated to the point that you are more likely will quit and go on to something else but at the same time it is a cool take on an old classic and the fact is that they were able to redo it in a way to make it all 3d and to present it in a different way.

That in itself is what an experience but depending on how long you play for well that depends on you because some people will like the game others mightn't not so much it really just depends on your own play style and if it is something you're into but i would love to know your thoughts on crazy climber 2000 for the PlayStation if you have played it yourself even if you played the original game.
